Heal It Right
Aftercare, Policies and FAQ
A tattoo is a wound before it is art. Follow this and your piece will heal sharp, bright, and clean.
How Do I Care for a New Tattoo?
First Hours
Leave the bandage or second-skin film on as directed at your appointment, usually 3 to 24 hours.
Washing
Wash gently with unscented antibacterial soap and lukewarm water, two to three times a day. Pat dry with a clean paper towel. Never scrub.
Moisturize
Apply a thin layer of unscented lotion or tattoo aftercare balm after washing. Thin is the key word. A suffocated tattoo heals badly.
Hands Off
Do not pick, scratch, or peel. Flaking and light scabbing are normal. Let it fall off on its own.
No Soaking
Showers are fine. Baths, pools, hot tubs, lakes, and the ocean are off limits for at least two weeks. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends waiting until the tattoo is fully healed before swimming.
Sun Protection
Keep the tattoo out of direct sun while healing, then use sunscreen for life. UV exposure fades ink and breaks down color over time. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends SPF 30 or higher on healed tattoos whenever outdoors.
Clothing
Wear loose, clean clothing over the area while it heals.
Concerns
If you see spreading redness, excessive swelling, unusual discharge, or have a fever, contact the studio and see a medical professional. These can be signs of infection that need prompt attention.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long does a tattoo take to heal?
The surface typically heals in two to three weeks, while the deeper layers of skin can take up to two months. Keep up gentle washing and thin moisturizing for the first few weeks, and protect the tattoo from sun the whole time.
Can I shower with a new tattoo?
Yes, showers are fine and keeping the tattoo clean is important. What you should avoid is soaking: skip baths, pools, hot tubs, lakes, and the ocean for at least two weeks.
My tattoo is peeling and flaking. Is that normal?
Completely normal. Light flaking and scabbing are part of healing. Do not pick or peel it; let the flakes fall off on their own so the ink underneath settles evenly.
What lotion should I use on a healing tattoo?
Use an unscented lotion or a dedicated tattoo aftercare balm, applied in a thin layer after washing. Avoid anything with fragrance or heavy petroleum, and avoid over-applying, since a suffocated tattoo heals poorly.
When can I work out after getting tattooed?
Light activity is fine after a day or two, but give it at least a week before heavy training that stretches or rubs the tattooed area, and keep sweat washed off gently. Gym equipment is also a hygiene risk for fresh tattoos.
Do I need to be 18 to get tattooed at Khroma Tattoo?
Yes. You must be 18 or older with a valid government-issued photo ID. The studio makes no exceptions, including with parental consent.
What happens if I miss my appointment?
No-shows and cancellations with less than 48 hours notice forfeit the deposit. With at least 48 hours notice, you can reschedule and your deposit moves with you.
How should I prepare for my tattoo appointment?
Sleep well the night before, eat a real meal beforehand, drink water, and arrive sober. Wear loose clothing that gives easy access to the placement area. If you show up in rough shape, the studio may reschedule you.
Will sun ruin my tattoo?
Direct sun is the fastest way to fade a tattoo. Keep a healing tattoo covered and out of the sun entirely, and once healed, use a strong sunscreen on it whenever it will be exposed.
